Past imperfect
Stranded in Ancient Egypt at the end of the STARGATE SG-1 episode Moebius, Jack O’Neill, Sam Carter, Teal’c and Daniel Jackson are enjoying the simple lives they’ve forged in the years since Ra was driven from Earth.
But life never stays simple for long…
Back in the twenty-first century, trouble strikes the SGC. With one of their own people snatched by renegade Tok’ra, Colonel Cameron Mitchell leads the new SG-1 on a chase through time to rescue their friend — and to protect their future.
But for Carter, Daniel and Teal’c, the greatest challenge is encountering themselves — and coming to terms with the consequences of their own choices.

“So this...” Cam gestured to the machinery. “This can only move us backwards and forwards in our own timeline.”
“That’s my best guess,” Sam said. She pushed her bangs back out of her face. Her hair had grown out and was now caught in a ponytail at the back of her neck. “Just like Janus’ puddlejumper.”
“I don’t even want to think about that thing,” Daniel said.“Or anything else to do with Janus.” He winced.
“Sorry,” Sam said. “Sore spot.”
“Damn right.” Daniel had only been out of the infirmary for two weeks since his latest brush with one of Janus’ inventions. This one had gotten him kidnapped and electrocuted.
They all spun around as the gate began to activate.
“Firing positions,” Cam said, crouching down beside the control panel. If someone were making a grab for Ba’al’s facility...
The wormhole opened and stabilized, a glittering puddle of blue. Cam’s radio crackled. “SG-1, this is Stargate Command. You are to return to Earth immediately.”
What the...? Cam chinned his radio on. “Stargate Command, we still have a lot to do here. Colonel Carter...”
“Return immediately,” the voice of Sergeant Harriman said firmly. “Stargate Command has been attacked.”

I just finished watching all of SG-1 from the beginning again and I still wanted more, so of course I turned to my huge library of Stargate novels looking for one I hadn't read yet. This one stood out because I remembered that I had started reading it at one point a long time ago but didn't end up finishing it for some reason that I can't remember, and also that it was set after Continuum, so it worked out. This was a pretty good read, though a lot of times I still wanted more details about what was going on with things like everyone's relationships and how the alternate SG-1 team from Moebius got to the point where they are during this story. There are a lot of different characters in here between the different versions of SG-1 and the new side characters, it's just packed full, so while there are some details, a lot of them are glossed over or just mentioned in passing, and I never really felt like any of them had enough attention devoted to each of the possibilities they could have provided. And I definitely wanted more Vala in here, Vala was always my favorite part of seasons 9 and 10, she was just such a fun character and though she didn't have a whole lot to do in this story, very little, I still sort of missed the humor and interesting point of view she normally provides. The plot for this was interesting, I love the time travel episodes and having just re-watched all of them definitely helped. Though I wish the Tok'ra were a little bit more involved, they're used as the set up for why the main team goes back, but then after that they're just sort of forgotten, so that part felt a little like a loose thread sometimes. This also dragged in the middle just a little bit, it just didn't feel like there was that much going on, like it was just the obligatory part that got you to the action packed climax. But it was a cool adventure, exploring the origins of the Tok'ra and also giving the SG-1 from Moebius another purpose besides just their original one. This was a pretty good read, even though it felt a little bit rushed at times, rarely taking the time to really explore the details and potential this premise could have offered. Overall it's not one of my favorite Stargate novels, but it was enjoyable and satisfied my need for more Stargate. And also I really hope that they start writing more novels set post series for SG-1, it worked great with the Atlantis Legacy series and I would love to see a book or two like that for SG-1 at some point.

STARGATE SG1 Moebius Squared eBook Melissa Scott Jo Graham Reviews
I'm about a third of the way through and I'd say that it starts out fairly slowly (outside of the short SGC action scene) and then starts moving about a quarter of the way into the book. I didn't have any problems keeping the dual characters distinct based on the nomenclature approach taken. The three previous shows that help are the movie Continuum and the two TV shows Moebius Part 1 and Moebius Part 2. I will update this when I have finished the book. My approach on reading these books is to read a few pages at a time, sometimes several times a day. I usually don't read a huge amount all at once.
The book starts out fairly slowly with a lot of groundwork laid and then gets into the action scenes about a third of the way in. There are a lot of action scenes mixed in with slower dialogues and some traveling scenes. I didn't have problems keeping the dual characters separate (there's a clever nomenclature that's used). The three previous shows that are helpful are Continuum, Moebius Part 1 and Moebius Part 2. Cure from Season 6 may also be helpful.
There are a lot of loose ends tied up in this book. Jo Graham's books get blessed by MGM so I consider her books to be the official line on where they want things to be. The loose ends being tied up are really well done and provides some sense of completion for many areas and characters. The book also answers some "what if I had ...?" type questions which are possible with dual characters. This book, is a must read for die-hard fans.
Just finished the kindle edition of this book, and yep - it's a good one. This was a fast paced action packed and very enjoyable story. Unfortunately the reader really needs to have watched or recently rewatched the relevant time travel episodes to completely get this story. The authors assume that the readers are familiar with the episodes and have simply continued the story line.
It gets quite confusing when there are two Daniels, Teal'c's and Carter's. The authors handled this quite well although I'm sure even they found it hard to sort out characters. But each character has developed into a distinct individual and that certainly helps with the sorting.
This book had a complex and well thought out plot. The action started early and just kept getting better. There were one or two small scenes that grated a little but overall I was enjoying the story too much to care.
Thankfully this book was very well written and the characters were very well described. The authors are obviously serious fans of the series and it shows. The entire book was rich with wonderful imagery and glimpses of ancient Egyptian life.
This book is a must for any Stargate fan and pretty well a must for anyone who simply loves a good story. Fandemonium seem to be doing a little better at picking winning stories - it helps that they have chosen authors who both enjoyed the series and know the series well.
