Life of God in the Son of Man was written by seventeenth century, Scottish minister Henry Scougal. It is a long letter, written to a friend who had lost the faith. Consequently, Life of God in the Son of Man is supportive, and its tone is one of friendship and love, betraying a true passion in Scougal's work. Being a letter, The Life of God in the Son of Man is somewhat short. It is divided into three parts. In the first part, Scougal provides an immensely instructive investigation of the true nature of religion. He addresses several poor conceptions of God and religion before turning to true religion--the "life of God in the son of man." In the second part, he explains the benefits of true religion. He focuses on the "excellence of divine love." The love of God, he emphasizes, is a great love, worth having! Nevertheless, in the third part, Scougal recognizes the difficulties in following God. He thus encourages the dependence upon divine assistance, and the contemplation of scripture in developing a Godly life. Although the writing is somewhat dated, Life of God in the Son of Man is a tour de force of spiritual wisdom, which has served countless spiritual wayfarers.

The Life of God in the Soul of Man Enhanced Version edition by Henry Scougal Religion Spirituality eBooks

I had wished to give this book 5 stars, but I can't bring myself to do it. But that's not meant to be a put down. Scougal's points are genuine, real, and Godly. This is, in my opinion, a book that explains what a passionate heart for God looks like, but it's hard for me to use that information to get to the same place. Whether you view your walk with God pragmatically, practically, or emotionally, sometimes a book can be a bit too lofty for real-world people.
The book is a keeper because I'll always refer to it for inspiration on the merits and even the pleasure of being sold out to God. But it stops at inspiration. There aren't very strong principles on just how to get there.
There's no doubt others will disagree with me, and that's fine. Reading older books is always a challenge, precisely because it's not written in a contemporary manner.
So that's my take - a great book, but difficult for me to imitate because it's a little too lofty, if that's a fair word to use!

The Life of God in the Soul of Man Enhanced Version edition by Henry Scougal Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Tucked away among a host of fancy theology books is this little gem written nearly 400 years ago. Written with introspection and love it can give you great comfort.
A couple hours ago, I was transported from time into Eternity once I picked up this book and began to read it. Written to a beloved, yet anonymous friend, Henry Scougal, in this quantitatively short (106 pages), but qualitatively massive and majestic letter, explains what true religion, Christianity, is; in brief, it is the exact title of this book Christianity is the Life of God in the Soul of a Man.

If the Gospel is simply "God was IN Christ reconciling the world unto Himself," then true Christianity is simply "God IN a man's soul, producing His Divine life through him." I received this book yesterday in the mail; I read it all the way through this morning in one setting. It is such a powerful, soul-enrapturing work from Scougal; probably best of all, which suits my literary tastes, this Is NOT a systematic theology book, but rather a letter written to a friend; and yet, like we see with the Apostle Paul, some of the weighteist theology is found in the letters of men written to others.

He wrote certain things that are worth our memorization "These chains and cords of love are infinitely more glorious than liberty itself; this slavery Is more noble than all the empires in the world" (pg. 41); "Had I my choice of all things that might tend to my present felicity, I would pitch upon this, to have my heart possessed with the greatest happiness and affection towards all men in the world" (pg.50); lastly, "the god of love had shot all his golden arrows at him, but could never pierce his heart, till at length he put himself into the bow, and darted himself straight into his breast" (pg.94). A needed book to purchase, to thwart your attention to heavenly things, and have the flame of our soul kindled afresh by the pious expressions of this man, who died at a relatively young age of twenty-eight years. A pearl of great price not to be trampled under feet by carelessness and flippancy. Every page contains gems of truth, meat for the soul, and sentiments to fill our minds with heavenly thoughts in our meditations. This book is Heaven-scented; may it bless any and everyone who picks it up to read it.
This is a great book...one must remember it was written in a much younger era and not your NIV style read. It's not a book to just read and pass over. It's a book that touches a core of the heart of times much more theological & deep than today's dumbed down palatable easy reads. This is not for the one-minute mindset of today's culture...but so so worth the time and concentration it demands.
A classic, written by an amazingly young yet mature in faith and highly qualified author.
Discovering the truths in this book was fundamental to the Wesleys and helped to cut George Whitefield free to preach, the result of which many thousands became reconciled to God.

This is, if you like, a description of what is a real and full relationship with the God of Abraham, the God if Isaac, the God of Jacob, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus.

Read it, struggle a bit with the authors seventeenth century English, seek to understand the Biblical truths of what Scougal is saying, and if you are not there yet, fervently pray, and ask the Lord of the Harvest, Jesus, for the wisdom, the knowledge, the faith which comes with being his servant and friend.
Henry Scougal's little book has influenced and changed the lives of countless readers. Most notably, in my estimation, George Whitefield. I first learned of this small treasure while reading John Pipers' The Pleasures of God. I often seek those works that influence the works of others. The Life of God in the Soul of Man is one of those foundational books; underlying immeasurable value in writings and ministries for hundreds of years.

Having purchased this book via the kindle store, I decided to also obtain a paper copy from . This is one to read and re-read on at least an annual basis. Highly recommended.
A book every Christian should read. It will go onto my "Read Once A Year" shelf in my library. If you aren't used to reading the somewhat archaic vocabulary and style it might require a bit of "getting in to it" but IT IS VERY WELL WORTH THE EFFORT!
The essence of Christianity seems to be lost in our day. People think they are Christians, simply based on what they do or because they made a decision 'to accept Christ', even as a child, yet leading a life of rebellion and immorality. Praying a sinners prayer (decisionism) does not necessarily lead to Spirit of Almighty God regenerating the spiritually dead man's soul. This book intelligently expounds on the essential truth of Christianity, that one needs to be "born again" if they are to have true fellowship with GOD, inherit eternal life and eventually enter into The Eternal Kingdom of GOD with Jesus risen from the dead as King and LORD. God bless. (John 3, Romans 8, Titus 35)
